Yes, the art of listening, waiting until the other person is finished speaking then, confirming that you heard and understood correctly before moving on to another point.
If your partner's lips are moving then you should be paying attention, making them feel heard, knodding your head, leaning in towards them to show you are captivated, giving it your full attentiion. I know there are some of us who can multi task and still get the point, but this may not give the right message to the speaker.
All you have to do is pay attention, listen and hear what is being said to you, confirm that what they said is what you heard. How do you do this? By replying in a direct manner, recapping what you heard and asking "Is that what you meant, did I get it all"? Then wait for their reply, and after they make the next point recap this point also. Ask again, is that you meant, did I get it all now? You will know if you got it all by the speaker giving you the OK. It is not until the person you are speaking to says "Yes" you got it all and that is correct, that you are in the zone. Remember you can listen and think you hear what is being said but, it is not until your partner says "Yes, that is it, you got it all."that you can move on to the next point.
I challenge you to try this with the next person you speak with. It works both ways you know. You also want to be heard and listened to RIGHT? Give me a call and I will demonstrate how good it feels to be be Heard and Listened to.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: very first "Humorous Contest"

There are a few reasons why you might want to attend...

1) To support the members who are giving it their best.

2) To learn another way of presenting humorous content to a group.

3) To discover in yourself one of the creative pieces that might be dormant.

4) To laugh and have a good time.
I hope to see you there & if you have already been to a Toastmasters Contest then, you will see the value right away.
Reaching Out In Kindness to Someone

Where have you been lately that you would like to be remembered? If you have a thought about someone? What do you usually do about it? When you say something that you would like to clarify how do you usually get that corrected? If you have to get in touch with someone and can't what is your next move? Most of the time we are chasing our ideas and trying to get them to be heard. One thing I can assure you, if I can't hold it in my hand and see it whenever I want to, I just may forget it. I like to hear my Blackberry ping, ring and chime but I don't always like the interruptions so I wait until I can give it my full attention. Notes have turned into SMS, Video Calls, Voice Messages and well just about anything that technology will allow us to do. It all works out in the end and if I want to show something to someone I must have my Blackberry charged and a bit of patience for the file to open and in just a few minutes we are looking at this very important message on a small screen giving it our all. There is something else I do that takes a bit more time to set up because you have to buy it online. That's easy. You have to set it up online. That's no problem. You have to use your credit card, it's safe and you get to send a card and gift right from your computer anywhere in the world in just a click of the button. I'm liking this more and more already. Once you get it - you have it forever, unless you throw it out of course. You can show it without your glasses or internet connection and you can DUPLICATE everything and have it printed on a card. Let me show you how, and you will be amazed at the response you will get from your friends and clients. You will not have to do or say anything, just watch the reaction of someone's face when they look at it again and again and again. You will stand out and be remembered for the one who has gone out of your way to be kind, and all you did was get in front of your computer and type away just like you usually do hoping that your emails and messages don't get DELETED AGAIN or go into Spam. You have done nothing different than you are doing right now, EXCEPT that you can now SEND OUT CARDS and GIFTS to anyone and even get paid for it without really trying every single time for every single card even your own. Have I said...Let me show you the way? OK, if you are really busy let KODY BATEMAN the CEO of our company do it. He is even better at it than I am. Print E-mail
Q: What do you suggest for warm-up and cooldown exercises?
A:
The best kind of warm-up before a tough workout is a few minutes of cardio (such as jumping rope or jumping jacks) followed by dynamic stretching. We were taught years ago to sit or stand and stretch one muscle group at a time. Contrary to popular belief, this kind of static stretching — which helps prevent muscle soreness and improves flexibility — is best performed AFTER a workout, when your muscles are very warm and loose.

In the past several years, fitness experts have discovered that there is a much more effective and healthy way to stretch BEFORE a workout: the dynamic stretch. Dynamic stretching is basically stretching with motion, so your body gets a chance to warm up the muscles slowly and in a functional way. It's a 1-2-3 punch: You warm up your body, get your heart rate up, and stretch all at the same time!

Below are some examples of dynamic stretches. Do them on a level surface for a total of about five minutes before you begin your workout. You will notice that with time the exercises will become easier and they will help improve your coordination, flexibility, and balance. Start by performing the exercises over a distance of about 30 yards; increase to 50 yards as you get more comfortable.

High-Knee Walking
Purpose: To bend your hips and knees, stretch your glutes and hamstrings, and warm up your arms and calves.
The stretch: Take an exaggeratedly high step, driving your knee as high as possible, and simultaneously drive your opposite elbow forward. Make sure that you push up onto your toes so that your calf gets involved. Use a normal running arm motion, with a 90-degree angle at the elbow; elbow goes from chin level to as far back as possible while maintaining forward straight posture.
Key points: Drive your knees up as high as possible; get up as high as you can on your toes; and drive your arms with each step.

Deep Side Lunge
Purpose: To bend your hips and knees, and stretch your glutes and your groin.
The stretch: Keep your torso upright and take a wide step out to the side.
Lower your body so you are in the sumo squat position. Recover by bringing your feet together and standing upright. Never cross your feet. Keep your hands on your hips.
Key point: The lower you lunge, the greater stretch you will achieve.

Trunk Rotation
Purpose: To stretch your lower back.
The stretch: Stand with your hands on your hips. Place your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing straight in front of you. Rotate from the waist to the right, then left. Go as far as you can while keeping your feet in the same position. Do the rotation about 25 times.
Key point: Start slowly; as you get going, you can go a little faster, with more rotation.

Butt Kicks
Purpose: To stretch your quads.
The stretch: This can be done walking or jogging. As you walk or jog, exaggerate the knee bend so that you are trying to kick yourself in the butt. You want your knee to point straight to the ground as your heel comes toward your butt. Keep your arms pumping in the normal running motion.
Key point: The higher you get your heel and the more you keep your knee toward the ground (instead of coming up in front of you with hip flexion), the more of a quad stretch you'll get.

Arm Swing
Purpose: To stretch your pectoral muscles and loosen your upper back.
The stretch: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Raise your arms out to your sides and swing them forward, crossing one over the other, so that you hug yourself, then open them up and out to the sides so you feel a stretch in the front of your shoulders. Keep your stomach tight as you do this exercise and start slowly. Increase your speed and range of motion as you get warmed up. Repeat about 30 times.
Key point: Cross your arms right over left and then left over right so you get equal stretching on both sides.

Last Updated: 07/16/2008
Often called “TV’s toughest fitness trainer,” Jillian Michaels has appeared on the U.S. and Australian versions of The Biggest Loser. The hurricane may not actually hit.”

American investigators said they expected more cases here, but noted that virtually all so far had been mild and urged Americans not to panic.

The speed and the scope of the world’s response showed the value of preparations made because of the avian flu and SARS scares, public health experts said.

The emergency declaration in the United States lets the government free more money for antiviral drugs and give some previously unapproved tests and drugs to children. One-quarter of the national stockpile of 50 million courses of antiflu drugs will be released.

Border patrols and airport security officers are to begin asking travelers if they have had the flu or a fever; those who appear ill will be stopped, taken aside and given masks while they arrange for medical care.

“This is moving fast and we expect to see more cases,” Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said at the news conference with Ms. Napolitano. “But we view this as a marathon.”

He advised Americans to wash their hands frequently, to cover coughs and sneezes and to stay home if they felt ill; but he stopped short of advice now given in Mexico to wear masks and not kiss or touch anyone. He praised decisions to close individual schools in New York and Texas but did not call for more widespread closings.

Besides the eight New York cases, officials said they had confirmed seven in California, two in Kansas, two in Texas and one in Ohio. The virus looked identical to the one in Mexico believed to have killed 103 people — including 22 people whose deaths were confirmed to be from swine flu — and sickened about 1,600. As of Sunday night, there were no swine flu deaths in the United States, and one hospitalization.

Other governments tried to contain the infection amid reports of potential new cases including in New Zealand and Spain.

Dr. Fukuda of the W.H.O. said his agency would decide Tuesday whether to raise the pandemic alert level to 4. Such a move would prompt more travel bans, and the agency has been reluctant historically to take actions that hurt member nations.

Canada confirmed six cases, at opposite ends of the country: four in Nova Scotia and two in British Columbia. Canadian health officials said the victims had only mild symptoms and had either recently traveled to Mexico or been in contact with someone who had.

Other governments issued advisories urging citizens not to visit Mexico. China, Japan, Hong Kong and others set up quarantines for anyone possibly infected. Russia and other countries banned pork imports from Mexico, though people cannot get the flu from eating pork.

In the United States, the C.D.C. confirmed that eight students at St. Francis Preparatory School in Fresh Meadows, Queens, had been infected with the new swine flu. At a news conference on Sunday, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said that all those cases had been mild and that city hospitals had not seen a surge in severe lung infections.

On the streets of New York, people seemed relatively unconcerned, in sharp contrast to Mexico City, where soldiers handed out masks.

Hong Kong, shaped by lasting scars as an epicenter of the SARS outbreak, announced very tough measures. Officials there urged travelers to avoid Mexico and ordered the immediate detention of anyone arriving with a fever higher than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit after traveling through any city with a confirmed case, which would include New York.

Everyone stopped will be sent to a hospital for a flu test and held until it is negative. Since Hong Kong has Asia’s busiest airport hub, the policy could severely disrupt international travel.

The central question is how many mild cases Mexico has had, Dr. Martin S. Cetron, director of global migration and quarantine for the Centers for Disease Control, said in an interview.

“We may just be looking at the tip of the iceberg, which would give you a skewed initial estimate of the case fatality rate,” he said, meaning that there might have been tens of thousands of mild infections around the 1,300 cases of serious disease and 80 or more deaths. If that is true, as the flu spreads, it would not be surprising if most cases were mild.

Even in 1918, according to the C.D.C., the virus infected at least 500 million of the world’s 1.5 billion people to kill 50 million. Many would have been saved if antiflu drugs, antibiotics and mechanical ventilators had existed.

Another hypothesis, Dr. Cetron said, is that some other factor in Mexico increased lethality, like co-infection with another microbe or an unwittingly dangerous treatment.

Flu experts would also like to know whether current flu shots give any protection because it will be months before a new vaccine can be made.

There is an H1N1 human strain in this year’s shot, and all H1N1 flus are descendants of the 1918 pandemic strain. But flus pick up many mutations, and there will be no proof of protection until the C.D.C. can test stored blood serum containing flu shot antibodies against the new virus. Those tests are under way, said an expert who sent the C.D.C. his blood samples.

Reporting was contributed by Sheryl Gay Stolberg from Washington, Jack Healy from New York, Keith Bradsher from Hong Kong and Ian Austen from Ottawa.

More Articles in World »A version of this article appeared in print on April 27, 2009, on page A1 of the New York edition.
Read the complete New York Times Electronic Edition on computer, just as it appears in print.
Ads by Google

HPV and Cervical Cancer - Cervical Cancer Center - EverydayHealth.com

HPV and Cervical Cancer - Cervical Cancer Center - EverydayHealth.com

Posted using ShareThis

Pre - Workout Meal to Help You Burn Fat

Health News
A Pre-Workout Meal to Help You Burn Fat
4/23/2009
Print E-mail
THURSDAY, April 23 (HealthDay News) -- The type of carbohydrates you eat before a workout may influence how much fat you burn during your exercise session, new research suggests.

Women who ate a breakfast rich in carbohydrates that do not cause a spike in blood sugar -- think muesli, yogurt, skimmed milk -- burned 50 percent more fat during a post-breakfast workout than did those who ate a breakfast rich in the kind of carbohydrates known to make blood sugar rise sharply, such as cornflakes and white bread.

Carbs that cause a sharp blood sugar rise are known as high-glycemic index carbs, while those that don't are called low-glycemic index carbs.

While other researchers have also found that a low-glycemic menu is beneficial to fat-burning, the new study has some unique points, noted lead author Emma Stevenson, a senior lecturer at Northumbria University, Newcastle Upon Tyne, U.K. She conducted the study while at the University of Nottingham.

"Most of the research in the effects of the glycemic load of pre-exercise feeding has been carried out in male subjects," Stevenson said. Most of it also has focused on endurance athletes, which doesn't describe the bulk of the population.

Instead, the new study included eight women of a typical healthy weight who averaged 24 years of age. On two different occasions, the women ate either a high- or the low-glycemic index breakfast, then walked on a treadmill for 60 minutes three hours later. Stevenson's group drew blood samples before the breakfast and also during and after the exercise to measure parameters such as free fatty acids, which are a marker for fat burning.

The average amount of fat oxidized during the exercise was 7.4 grams after the low-glycemic meal but just 3.7 grams the higher glycemic index meal, a nearly 50 percent difference.

Why the disparity? High-glycemic index carbs are known to spur a big spike in blood sugar, and the researchers believe that a meal rich in low-glycemic carbs, which elicit a lower blood sugar response, may boost the body's use of body fat for burning rather than for blood sugar.

Each breakfast totaled about 265 calories, but the low-glycemic meal had more fiber, the team noted.

The study was funded by Mars UK, the food and candy company. It is published in the May issue of The Journal of Nutrition.

The take-home message, according to Stevenson: To burn more fat, focus on the low-glycemic foods. "LGI foods tend to be whole grains, porridge, some whole grain cereals, soy and linseed bread," she said.

The new study makes sense and builds on previous research, said Barry Braun, director of the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, who has done his own research on post-workout eating.

While Stevenson's study findings are limited to healthy-weight women, Braun said he suspects it will also hold true for those hoping to shed excess pounds. "Eating large amounts of high-glycemic carbs right before exercise is probably as detrimental for overweight people as it is for normal-weight," he said.

Like Stevenson, he said he is talking about pre-exercise meals for those who work out at less than triathlon intensity. "There may be a place for these high-glycemic carbs" when an athlete needs high energy immediately, such as before running a marathon, Braun said.

Last year, Braun's own research found that the type of food eaten after exercise can make a difference in weight control for everyday exercisers.

Based on his studies, Braun suggests that eating a meal low in carbohydrates after working out at moderate intensity, is potentially better for weight control than eating a meal high in carbs.

More information

There's more on carbohydrates at Harvard University.

Reinventing Date Night for Long-Married Couples

Search Health3,000+ Topics

WELL
Reinventing Date Night for Long-Married Couples

Nola Lopez
SIGN IN TO E-MAIL OR SAVE THIS
PRINT
REPRINTS
SHARE

By TARA PARKER-POPE
Published: February 12, 2008
Long-married couples often schedule a weekly “date night” — a regular evening out with friends or at a favorite restaurant to strengthen their marital bond.

Well

Tara Parker-Pope blogs about health. Join the discussion.
Go to Well »
But brain and behavior researchers say many couples are going about date night all wrong. Simply spending quality time together is probably not enough to prevent a relationship from getting stale.

Using laboratory studies, real-world experiments and even brain-scan data, scientists can now offer long-married couples a simple prescription for rekindling the romantic love that brought them together in the first place. The solution? Reinventing date night.

Rather than visiting the same familiar haunts and dining with the same old friends, couples need to tailor their date nights around new and different activities that they both enjoy, says Arthur Aron, a professor of social psychology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The goal is to find ways to keep injecting novelty into the relationship. The activity can be as simple as trying a new restaurant or something a little more unusual or thrilling — like taking an art class or going to an amusement park.

The theory is based on brain science. New experiences activate the brain’s reward system, flooding it with dopamine and norepinephrine. These are the same brain circuits that are ignited in early romantic love, a time of exhilaration and obsessive thoughts about a new partner. (They are also the brain chemicals involved in drug addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder.)

Most studies of love and marriage show that the decline of romantic love over time is inevitable. The butterflies of early romance quickly flutter away and are replaced by familiar, predictable feelings of long-term attachment.

But several experiments show that novelty — simply doing new things together as a couple — may help bring the butterflies back, recreating the chemical surges of early courtship.

“We don’t really know what’s going on in the brain, but as you trigger and amp up this reward system in the brain that is associated with romantic love, it’s reasonable to suggest that it’s enabling you to feel more romantic love,” said the anthropologist Helen E. Fisher, of Rutgers, who has published several studies on the neural basis of romantic love. “You’re altering your brain chemistry.”

Over the past several years, Dr. Aron and his colleagues have tested the novelty theory in a series of experiments with long-married couples.

In one of the earliest studies, the researchers recruited 53 middle-aged couples. Using standard questionnaires, the researchers measured the couples’ relationship quality and then randomly assigned them to one of three groups.

One group was instructed to spend 90 minutes a week doing pleasant and familiar activities, like dining out or going to a movie. Couples in another group were instructed to spend 90 minutes a week on “exciting” activities that appealed to both husband and wife. Those couples did things they didn’t typically do — attending concerts or plays, skiing, hiking and dancing. The third group was not assigned any particular activity.

After 10 weeks, the couples again took tests to gauge the quality of their relationships. Those who had undertaken the “exciting” date nights showed a significantly greater increase in marital satisfaction than the “pleasant” date night group.

While the results were compelling, they weren’t conclusive. The experiment didn’t occur in a controlled setting, and numerous variables could have affected the final results.

More recently, Dr. Aron and colleagues have created laboratory experiments to test the effects of novelty on marriage. In one set of experiments, some couples are assigned a mundane task that involves simply walking back and forth across a room. Other couples, however, take part in a more challenging exercise — their wrists and ankles are bound together as they crawl back and forth pushing a ball.

Before and after the exercise, the couples were asked things like, “How bored are you with your current relationship?” The couples who took part in the more challenging and novel activity showed bigger increases in love and satisfaction scores, while couples performing the mundane task showed no meaningful changes.

Dr. Aron cautions that novelty alone is probably not enough to save a marriage in crisis. But for couples who have a reasonably good but slightly dull relationship, novelty may help reignite old sparks.

And recent brain-scan studies show that romantic love really can last years into a marriage. Last week, at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology conference in Albuquerque, researchers presented brain-scan data on several men and women who had been married for 10 or more years. Interviews and questionnaires suggested they were still intensely in love with their partners. Brain scans confirmed it, showing increased brain activity associated with romantic love when the subjects saw pictures of their spouses.

It’s not clear why some couples are able to maintain romantic intensity even after years together. But the scientists believe regular injections of novelty and excitement most likely play a role.

“You don’t have to swing from the chandeliers,” Dr. Fisher said. “Just go to a new part of a town, take a drive in the country or better yet, don’t make plans, and see what happens to you.”

well@nytimes.com

10 Steps to Manage Your Weight -
